We are traveling while car camping on the bed of a mini truck. From an empty state with just a canopy attached, we installed shelves, and it’s starting to look a bit like a base. Today, we are in the northeastern part of Gunma. It was August during filming and hot, so we came to this high-altitude area. We came to “Sen no Taki” found on the map. The river water is very cold. We made a detour to a nearby spring. On the map, it was labeled “Bijin no Mizu,” but the water volume is low. Since there’s another spring ahead, we’ll just fill one bottle for now. Delicious. !??? To the second spring. Called “Oishii Wakimizu,” this one has more water. Let’s fill the water tank too. To a place we couldn’t reach in winter due to snow. We want to scout a free campsite ahead. 4WD activated, showcasing the mini truck’s true potential. We are excited about the sudden off-road driving. Looks like we’ve arrived. A shelter? The toilet has a rather wild atmosphere. The toilet is scary, but it’s a spacious and nice place. On the map, it was labeled as a rest house. It seems to be the trailhead for “Mt. Hotaka,” one of Japan’s 100 famous mountains. According to the sign, the course from here to Mt. Hotaka is the most common. We’re hungry, it’s about lunchtime. The restaurant at the hot spring facility “Hanasaki no Yu” looked delicious, so we’re going. We’ve bathed here a few times, and the water was very good. Passing through a winning spot to the restaurant. Umiko ordered the “Oze Maitake Bowl” (1,300 yen). Maitake mushrooms are a specialty of this area. Delicious! You can fully enjoy the thick maitake, and the Oze pork is juicy. Tatsuo ordered the “Hanasaki Local Flour Tempura Soba” (1,730 yen). The texture and flavor of the soba are well felt, and the tempura is crispy and delicious! It was the right choice to come here. We bought honey at the shop and continue our journey. Next, we came to “Michi no Eki Oze Katashina.” Super crowded!! We wanted to buy ingredients for dinner at the farmers’ market here. Got some sweets too. We are now in the southern part of Katashina Village. We booked a wonderful campsite today! We’re heading there now. Umiko has been here once on a solo trip, and the location is fantastic. Entering the forest road. “Oze Kogen Auto Campsite.” The river is right next door! The site is spacious and feels great. Katashina Village, Tone District, Gunma Prefecture. One of Japan’s heaviest snowfall areas, bustling with winter sports enthusiasts in winter. We’ll be car camping here today. Let’s get the space organized. The car side tent from Amazon was about 25,000 yen. It was tough to get the hang of setting it up, lol. Alright! Just as imagined! Last time, we connected it to the side, but this time we tried connecting it to the back. Bad news. Opening the sides for a more open feel. When attached to the side of the car, the canopy divides the space, which was a downside. Based on last time’s reflection, aiming for a more comfortable base! Moved the fridge to a more convenient position from the tent side. The dorayaki we bought at the roadside station earlier. Thank you for the watermelon gift! Having a snack, now let’s go for a swim. The river is a 10-second walk away, isn’t that amazing? Let’s take a peek inside the river. Cold and refreshing. Returning to childhood for a while. Swimming against the current is fun. The area around the plant roots is home to small fish. Even though it’s the height of summer in August, the temperature is cool and comfortable. We received cucumbers from the manager. We’ll salt them, mix with the myoga we bought earlier, and make a vinegar dish. The bed on the truck bed is comfortable. You get really sleepy after swimming, right? Tatsuo toasts with sake. Ahh~ It hits the spot~ Corn is a local specialty, let’s taste it raw first. Sweet and juicy! It has a different flavor than when cooked, and it’s delicious. Let’s taste the tofu we bought earlier. This is also delicious! There are many tasty things around here. An ant came to taste the corn juice. !? Ugh, ugh. So good~ One more bite… It’s early, but let’s start the BBQ. We have all the appliances on the shelf, but it’s a bit hard to use from inside the tent. Cooking rice with the spring water we collected today. Cooking while breathing in the fresh air of nature, simply nice. I’ve grown to like the mini truck even more. High off-road capability. Driving on gravel roads with 4WD was the best. Today we used 4H, and there are two more modes, 4L and diff lock. A vehicle full of potential. Preparing the sauce to go with the meat we’ll grill later. An incident from last night. Do you remember the big bug incident from yesterday? I don’t remember. Before going to bed, when I went to the toilet, I felt something moving on my shoulder. I returned to the car and asked Tatsuo if there was something on my back. Tatsuo: No, there’s nothing. Then, while changing clothes, a bug came out from inside my clothes. I was surprised and screamed. A large green stick insect. Tatsuo was surprised by Umiko’s voice and the stick insect. Umiko: I want to take a picture of the stick insect, where’s my phone? Tatsuo: Toss. Threw the stick insect outside and went to sleep. …that was the incident. Here comes the main event. We prepared the sauce for this beef steak. The rice is cooked, and we’re all set. Tatsuo’s favorite edible spicy oil. Eating while watching the meat grill. First, just with salt and pepper. Delicious. Next, with sauce (onion, honey, soy sauce, olive oil, vinegar, cinnamon). Perfect match with the onion. Rice companion No.2. Shonan Kugenuma Shirasu Spicy Oil. This was given by a senior! Thank you. Tatsuo is in charge of washing dishes. We haven’t bathed yet, so we’re going to the hot spring. Umiko, who is non-alcoholic, will drive. Tatsuo doesn’t trust Umiko’s mini truck driving. Umiko got her manual license last year, has driven the Suzuki Every quite a bit, but is still not used to the mini truck. You’re a good driver. You’re annoying. “Day Trip Hot Spring Sasa no Yu.” There was also a campsite! It seems to be a natural hot spring, looking forward to it. The water was good. Shocking. The receptionist was beautiful. It might be a stereotype, but I imagined the receptionist to be an old lady or an old man. I was surprised because she was a beautiful woman with a presence. The water was a simple alkaline spring, and it felt good. Second party starts~ Umiko toasts with soda water, Tatsuo with a highball. It’s the first time we’ve camped so leisurely. Since we arrived early at 12, we were able to spend a very fulfilling time. The nap was the best. There’s a hook to hang a lantern at the top of the tent. It’s a spacious tent, could BBQ with 4-5 people. This could be connected to the back of the mini truck. There was a perfectly placed hole in the canopy, and it could be connected with an S-hook. The S-hook was purchased at Daiso. The move to the bed is incredibly smooth. Checking on Guru (cat) at home with a monitoring camera. We ask a pet sitter to take care of them while we’re out. Current state of the mini truck. DIY projects done so far. 1. Added shelves. 2. Installed plywood on the ceiling for rain protection. Future plans. A canopy here… LOL Adding another canopy? Install a lockable rear hatch. Reinforce the sides with wire mesh or frames. Add a carrier on top of the canopy. The mini truck continues to evolve, the excitement never stops. Even though it’s August, we need cold weather gear. Current temperature, inside the car: 23.8°C, outside: 21.9°C. The climate is just right for a thin sleeping bag. If car camping in the plains in midsummer, you can’t avoid temperatures over 30°C. This place feels like another world. The next morning. Since starting car camping in the mini truck, this is the first time it hasn’t rained. The first and second nights of car camping in the mini truck were heavy rain. Finally clear on the third try. It’s a good morning. Touching the cold river water woke me up instantly. Washing my face with river water. Mosquito coil stand bought at Daiso. Making coffee with the spring water we collected yesterday. It’s a hassle to move between the tent and the truck bed, so we use an extension cord from the portable power source. Oh, no. Forgot to attach a part. Using a total of 1,014W with the milk frother and kettle. It’s only the third time car camping in the mini truck, so there’s a lot to discover. As we do it more, we’ll find the best places and ways to use the tools. Morning café latte. Let’s make breakfast. Recently, hot sandwiches have become a breakfast staple. Ever since buying it on Amazon, we’ve been using the hot sandwich maker a lot. Boiled egg, cabbage and tuna mayo mix, dried parsley, cheese. Using 573W, the portable power source is down to 17%. The truck bed is the kitchen. The tent is the dining table. Delicious. The second one is done. There’s no way this isn’t delicious. We’ll upgrade the mini truck with more DIY before the next car camping. There are still many challenges with mini truck car camping, but we plan to gradually upgrade it!
