Hello, everyone! I’m Hideo Kojima. It’s been a while since the last HideoTube. Now, we’re bringing you “HideoTube 2024 Special Edition”! I’m here with great staff and great guests. Also, some of the staff are from the VIVANT team as well. And the guests! She is the world’s number one game-loving newscaster. Welcome!
You’re raising the expectations too high! Okay, let me introduce myself. I’m here representing the YouTube channel “GAME×GAME”, and I love games more than anything else! I call myself “the Number One Gamer” of all newscasters! I’m Risa Unai from TBS. Thank you for having me today!
Wow, this is great. I can’t believe that this is HideoTube! This might only happen once! Unless you all like this episode. Since this is a collaboration project, among the production staff, we actually have Yohei Miyazaki, who directed TBS’s Sunday night drama series, VIVANT. Yes, thank you very much!
So today, I am here at Kojima Productions. This is your office, but what is this room for? This is the kitchen, so we drink coffee or eat in here. We also have parties or watch movies together. Many of the staff still work from home, so I’d like for them to come back…
Come work at the office! This is such a wonderful office! So this time, Kojima Productions’ HideoTube Special Edition is collaborating with my YouTube channel, GAMExGAME, to bring you this episode. GAME×GAME and KOJI×KOJI! GAME×KOJI! And on the GAME×GAME episode, we went to Akihabara together. How was it?
It was fun! I played board games and “Wacky Gator”. The game you’d been longing to play! If you want to know the results, check out the video. Definitely! It’s worth watching. You almost pulled your arm muscle. Yeah, it still hurts! Please check the video on the GAME×GAME channel.
So, what we’re going to be doing on this special edition of HideoTube, we have another special guest joining us. From Death Stranding, the man behind the Japanese voice of Sam Porter Bridges, Mr. Kenjiro Tsuda! Welcome! We must hug! It’s been so long! Great to see you again!
So Mr. Tsuda, who played Sam, is here with us! Thank you for having me! He is so popular! Every day I hear his voice somewhere! You’re working too much. Right back at you! I haven’t been able to see you lately. That’s right. And because I couldn’t see you, I bought this.
I have this on my desk. “Sasayaki (Whisper)” Hey, everyone! You all bought this, right? This is a photobook of Mr. Tsuda. May I have your autograph on this later, please? It’s incredible inside. I can’t show it here. Alright, the three of us will lead this HideoTube Special Edition!
Let’s jump right into our first topic. Death Stranding It has achieved 16 million users! It’s been about 4 years. It was released in 2019. There are that many?! For a while, we were counting the number of games sold. But since the game is now on subscription services like PlayStation Plus,
We don’t know the exact number of games anymore. That’s why we’re calling 16 million “users,” not copies sold. This data is as of December 15th last year. Since then, we had the holiday season and new years. Also, the Apple version is now available
So it might be around 17 million now. That’s a nation! That number is equal to a country! Yeah, it’s worldwide players. Wow! Mr. Tsuda, you played Sam in Death Stranding. What do you think about the game? The world is just tremendous!
I mean, there was a time when you were called a prophet. Yeah, the pandemic happened. It was right after it was released, wasn’t it? Yeah, three months later. I didn’t like that at all! I can imagine! I never thought that that sort of thing would happen in my lifetime.
True, true. I don’t know why, but people who play Animal Crossing love Death Stranding. It’s so fun building highways! That’s what it is! It makes you want to complete all of them all. There are so many parts to enjoy. All players can enjoy themselves in many different ways.
So, originally this game was released for PS4. And from there you expanded this universe? In a way, it’s a franchise… Death Stranding was the first game I made after becoming independent. This is our own IP. First, it was released on SONY. Then, on PC. Later, Director’s Cut was released for PS5.
We wanted to expand this. As you can see here, You can play it on PS4, PS5 for the SONY platforms. Also, when you subscribe to PlayStation Plus, you can play it there, too. This is why we count by the number of players. You can also play it on PC, like STEAM, EPIC,
PC Game Pass, that’s Microsoft. And at the end of last month, the Apple version was released. A game like Death Stranding can now be played on a smartphone! What a time we live in! You can play it while walking! Almost everyone has a smartphone. Yeah. It contains everything, from email to phone calls
And internet… some even do work on smartphones. And now finally, games are here. Small games have been available, of course. But I mean, playing an AAA game… Times have changed. Today we have a device. So, Mr. Tsuda, would you like to try it? Can I?! That’s an iPhone 15 Pro.
This is like a game controller. This is from a company called Backbone. Of course, you can play without it. But if you want to play with a controller, you can attach this. It’ll look like this. You can carry this in your pocket or in your bag. It’s extendable.
And you place it there. There’s a logo on the back. You put the phone between the grips. I see. You can play it by touching the screen. But for those who like to play like this. And just to be clear, when a high-spec game is ported, oftentimes the quality goes down.
But with Apple’s technology, the quality is basically the same as the original. So you play the game. But you can’t carry a gaming console outside. So, you can play it with this, on the train or in the park. And when you’re home, you can continue where you left off on your Mac.
That’s so cool! I see, it’s all connected. A long time ago, I was doing this thing called Transfarring at Konami. Now that’s become a reality. I see. Isn’t it rare for such a big title like this to be available on so many platforms? I think so. Because we are an independant studio
We can work with SONY or Microsoft or Apple. Not many companies are like that. And that makes it possible for us to expand Death Stranding and also create a sequel. You’ve just mentioned about the sequel. So now, let’s talk about the sequel to Death Stranding, Death Stranding 2!
To start, let’s watch the latest trailer. Let’s chat while we watch. On the left is George Miller, the director of MAD MAX. Wow! That’s amazing. Look at the graphics! Those are visuals captured from the PS5. It looks so real. This is a cutscene. The graphics have advanced greatly.
Yes, but I think it will advance even further. The woman you see here is Fragile. Her face is covered with hands, but that’s one of the key elements this time. Is that a mask? We call it “Second Hand”, and Léa loves it. Really? It moves, actually. You’ll see more later. What are they doing?
Oh, this… It looks very eerie. This person here is actually Elle Fanning. You can’t tell at this point though. I see! And you see that tar-like thing just spewed out. Which is kind of like Timefall and accelerates time. Oh, it’s Timefall!
And when she opens her eyes, you see it’s Elle Fanning. This is called the Magellan, a ship that the members travel in this time around. It goes underground. Underneath the ground?! You see Fragile here. And she’s showing Sam around the ship. So it’s a ship this time.
Though he does the deliveries by himself, this ship will accompany him. So in Death Stranding, the bases were in certain places, but this time, it moves with you? When you connect to the Chiral Network, the ship can move freely in those areas.
Once you connect it on your own, you can call the ship. And your crew will be there. You can see the Second Hand here again. You can do stuff like brush your teeth. Really?! How handy! Wow, I want one! I hope it’ll become popular amongst the Parisians.
I wonder if it can do my makeup and dry my hair. That would make your mornings easier! And here is another new character. I used a stop-motion animation feeling here. I dropped the frame rate. The model is Fatih Akin, a German film director. You will be traveling with him.
He’ll be hanging by your side. You can converse, so this time you’re not alone; you’ll go with him. Sam’s sidekick. Quite an impactful character! And why he became that way… You’ll learn as you play the game. As you can see in the subtitles, this is a different continent.
It’s no longer the American continent. He’s going there to connect the Chiral Network. If the UCA goes, since it’s a different continent, it can be regarded as an invasion. Therefore, a private entity will be setting up the infrastructure. Ah, so it’s not an invasion. Fragile is the leader of this team.
I see. She’s no longer her weak self from the past. So this is a flood. The terrain changes in real time during the game. There are earthquakes, forest fires, floods. Like this, so you need to be careful. A road can be cut off. Ah, that’s scary. There are also BTs like this.
Scary! Where is that? The moon seems so close! This is a BT, too. That thing on George Miller’s shoulder… It was inspired by Captain Harlock. Ah, I see. The ship submerges in tar like this and travels underground. So you can hide! Lots of vehicles, too.
There are rooms where he can rest like last time. Also, there are these mysterious mechanical soldiers. And look here! He can now unload his backpack. You can put it down, fight, then pick it up again. Here it comes! The villan. The previous trailer ended here. Now, the face is revealed.
It’s Higgs. You may remember the concept about the stick and the rope from before. Now he’s saying that the “stick” is necessary. The word “another” seems to have a meaning. Yeah. He’s a Japanese Joruri Bunraku puppet. I want you to watch this scene carefully. I can’t say anything yet, so I won’t.
Yeah, I can’t say. Here comes another new character. Oh, wow. This is incredible! A guitar battle! Higgs sings a lot this time. Seeing this, could Higgs be on our side? I can’t be sure. It’s quite big, isn’t it? It’s laughing. Something mechanical came out. Sam in an apron! Sam doing housework.
Is this Lou’s point of view? The official title will appear. “ON THE BEACH” The Second Hand again. Carefully watch the cigarette smoke here. It forms into human figures. Remember this. That’s Elle Fanning, a mystery character. Friend or foe? That’s the girl who came out from the chrysalis in the first scene.
She’s floating in the air by threads. You can kind of see threads here. And here it is, “SHOULD WE HAVE CONNECTED?” “Connection” was the theme in DS1. Now it’s totally different. And Lou, who should’ve existed, actually didn’t. It’ll be released in 2025. We still have many more things to do.
The assets are ready, so we need to construct them. And for Mr. Tsuda… We’re going to start dubbing the Japanese this year. I’m looking forward to it! That was the latest trailer of DS2. What did you think, Mr. Tsuda? Well, it’s just full of mysteries! It’s full of mysteries, but…
You’ll start to understand once you start recording. That’s true. Have you two already talked about the scenario? No, we haven’t. No! I have no clue! I only know what I have seen in the trailer, just like everyone else. There are more characters. I’m just keeping quiet about them.
Of course, there’s a sense that there’s more. There are so many lines, too. How long did it take you to complete the recording for DS? How long was that? A year and a half maybe? I think so, yeah, about a year and a half.
And near the end, we recorded so many grumbles, like forever. Sam grumbles a lot. Like when he’s moving! The talking-to-himself series was left at the end. Like, “Why me?” Even when he’s fighting Higgs. Sam says, “Why me?!” Do you improvise too? Yeah, there’s ad-lib!
On Mr. Tsuda’s last day, I couldn’t attend due to a business trip, and it was this scene where I, as a ghost, come out from underneath Sam’s bed. And Mr. Tsuda improvised the line, “Hideo!!” I did, I did! Brings back memories. Actually, you did some recording earlier today, right?
We have footage, fresh from the oven! Yes, in the Kojima Productions studio. Let’s take a look. “What’s your level?” “You can see them, right?” “No, but I can sense them.” “Level two, then.” “On The Strand” We’ll add a little reverb.
This is one hell of a ship you got here. Courtesy of the UCA, I’m guessing? Sounds like a UCA bigshot. Seriously? You know better than to believe that bullshit. We’ll use this take! Okay! You were completely Sam. Really? This is guaranteed to be a major hit, no doubt! It’s great!
We’re going to start recording this year. Yeah. Maybe spring? Recording in full swing! Yes, full swing. The cast has already been decided. We’re sorry we can’t show you this list. We can’t read it out loud either. But the lineup looks like this. This is incredible. I see. Some familiar faces, too.
Yeah! Is there anyone you’ve already worked with, Mr. Tsuda? Yes, many of them! You can say the name because we’ll bleep it out. Oh okay, in that case, [bleep] for that role! I’m fully convinced. For that role, right? Exactly. I select everyone myself. I think that’s so amazing.
I got my offer through DM. Really?? By DM?! Yeah, on Twitter. I thought Mr. Tsuda was great. And I was looking around for Sam. I wondered what Mr. Tsuda was like, and he was on Twitter. I started following him, and he followed me back.
He asked me if I was interested! Like, the offer was so casual. I didn’t expect him to follow me. Right after I noticed it, I quickly followed back. I thought it was going to be like a small role. But it turned out to be the MAIN ROLE!
The offer was so casual! So I was surprised. And then, I talked with his agent later. So from what we just saw, within the limits of what you can say, are there any places you want to highlight? Yeah, so Léa’s cigarette…
You saw the human-like figures appear out of her smoke. That’s from Saint Kūya. Ah I see! This sculpture shows him chanting Namu Amida-butsu. I really like him. Last year, the sculpture was brought to Ueno. I was able to take lots of pictures.
But it went back to Kyoto. So, I went to see it last year in December. It doesn’t really have a deeper meaning. So, you put that expression into that smoke. As to why that thing comes out… please use your imagination. And George Miller… why he doesn’t have his other arm. Oh yeah!
You saw him insert his arm into something, and then the Magellan went down. Think about that, too. Also, what is that cat-like creature with wings on his shoulder? Yeah, what is that cat? I can’t tell you yet. That appeared at the beginning of the trailer, too. It’s kind of like
Mr. Bird sitting on Captain Harlock’s shoulder. But George Miller looks a bit like Captain Okita (of Space Battleship Yamato). And also, this mysterious… He’s an enemy, right? Looks like a samurai. This mechanical guy…Friend or foe? We’re not sure! True, you can’t tell. And, Higgs is back!
Higgs is pretty crazy now! His character has changed quite a bit. He’s using a guitar as a weapon. He’s going to sing a lot. He’s going to be singing?! Troy’s a singer. And Satoshi Mikami, who dubs the Japanese for Higgs, is also an amazing singer. Yeah, he’s so good.
So, he’ll be singing a lot, too. That’s great! Will we get to hear a Japanese version? I’m still debating between English and Japanese. Also, the puppet, modeled after Fatih Akin, will always be by your side. If you complain about something, he’ll respond back.
Here it is! This was created with a 3D printer. We made it for performance capture, but this was too heavy. So, a lighter one was made for the actual performance. Is this life-size? Yes, it is. It’s larger than I expected. This character left quite an impression.
The movement is a little different from the other characters, but if anything, that strangeness pulled me in. In order to make it look like stop-motion animation, we dropped the frame rate so it may feel a bit strange. Wow! Changing the frame rate partially in the middle of a game..!
It’s possible because it’s digital. I’ve never heard of such a thing! And also, Elle Fanning has finally appeared. Yes! Elle Fanning! She’s a mystery character. She’s kind of suspicious. When you think about it, Fragile doesn’t even know who made the ship. She’s saying such things. Doesn’t even knows who’s it is.
So, it’s not looking good. And also, tell us about Lou. Yes. In the previous trailer, Lou got shot and turned into a ghost. Put that trailer and this one together, and let your imagination run free. For me, the previous game had a happy ending.
It ended with clear skies, and I felt relieved. The sequel starts not long after that moment. And the message has completely changed now. The theme of, “Should we have connected?”… Before the pandemic, I actually had the whole plot for DS2 prepared. But, after experiencing the pandemic,
What I wrote before the pandemic no longer worked. I see. So, I rewrote it from scratch. But yeah, the message of this one… The previous one was about connecting everyone. But the vertical lines serve as a hint. Now, in honor of HideoTube 2024 Special Edition, we have messages from some special people.
Are we ready? Let’s watch it now. Wow. Wow. That looks great. Yeah, there’s a lot of new stuff going on. Yeah, just, I mean, all the stuff that we’ve done recently is sort of, it sort of put a lot of the pieces together on what’s happening in this story.
There’s a couple of things, you know, like in the trailer it says, “We didn’t mean to string you along.” Now I know what that means. We kept you in the dark. I didn’t know what that meant until the last two days, But in scale, it looks just epic.
It just got bigger and bigger and bigger. And I love the robot barking dog. I’m curious what those little suction cups were on the arm…that must have smelled because Fragile’s second pair of hands are covering her nose. And then they squirted some sort of inky fluid, which might have to do with
Having the amino acids in the oil… So, there’s a lot going on. But yes, it’s such a complicated, vast world and it’s…. the pieces are slowly, even even me, in the game, doing the lines in real time, It’s all connecting the dots. Like, it’s wrapping up in a really cool way.
And with this trailer, I mean, gosh, it’s just amazing to see the steps that it’s taken of, you know, the worlds that Hideo has been talking about and seeing them come to life and seeing the characters more fully formed. And even the fight sequences are just
That one little snippet of a fight like blew my mind. And I know there’s so much more to come, but it’s just a very special project to be a part of. This whole experience has been extremely cool and unlike anything I’ve ever been a part of before.
So I’m happy to be a cog in the wheel of his genius mind. I think the emotion of this, of Death Stranding 2, of the game this time around really comes through in the trailer. And I think there’s even more to discover of that. But everyone’s relationship, especially, Sam and Fragile’s relationship
And how Fragile has really come into her own. I love watching how everyone interacts with each other. And I think in the trailer too, I was talking about the fight sequences, but that sequence with Higgs, the villain, is really special. First of all, I found myself
Very caught up in the experience of watching it. As a trailer, it works extremely well, because it promises me a great feast, which I think, I don’t know, it’s like going to a great restaurant with… where I can experience all sorts of things
And all sorts of delights and unusual things that I’ve never met before. And yet, be connected to something very basic and human. To be honest, I’m very proud to be part of it. I mean, when I saw myself, either way, after the first moment I saw myself,
I thought, okay, that’s you know, that’s fine and good and interesting. But pretty soon I forgot all that. And I was very much, very much caught up with what I saw. And I can only congratulate you, Kojima san. It’s really wonderful. I’m blown away, man. I mean, like, if if Godfather is
Is is a great film — the first Part, and when The Godfather II came, you know you never thought that after such a great film you cannot make a better second Part, and it was better you know, The Godfather II and I have the same impression with Death Stranding.
I really love the first part of it, you know, the first game is fantastic. But this is like, Death Stranding 2 is like The Godfather Part II. This will be better You know, even better. Well, that’s so beautiful. I mean, seeing seeing this tiny puppet of me, you know, it’s…
This is like, I mean…We do history. I do I do movies, you know, in a way, to be immortal. You know, that’s one of the reasons I’m doing pictures, in a way. And and seeing myself or seeing, you know, the inspiration for that
For that character in your game, like, okay, I can stop doing films. I’m immortal already, you know? So, that’s so cool. You know, the only thing is I need to shave, you know? Thank you very much! Those were messages from some very big names. The anticipation mounts for the release of DS2!
Let’s move on to the next topic! Next up, Hideo Kojima’s documentary film will be released! We premiered it at the Tribeca Film Festival last year. And it will stream on Disney+ starting February 23rd. Okay, so let’s take a look at the trailer. There we have it.
This film will start streaming on Disney+ starting February 23rd. A documentary film of Hideo Kojima! This was done by Glen Milner, who’s a director and a cameraman. He started filming this back in 2017. Oh, wow. Mr. Kojima, I always see you posting on social media and other platforms
About things that you like or have an interest in. But your thoughts behind launching your own independent studio… and there must have been pressure and risks involved, but you never show that. Everything always has a risk. If you don’t take risks, things won’t move along. There’s no use in complaining about it.
But in my case, I already had decades of experience creating games, so it was just doing the same thing, but independently. So, I had no worries there. And in this documentary, we’ll be able to see you taking on those challenges, right? Yes. A side of you that you don’t usually share.
I don’t really want you to see it. When I watched the trailer on YouTube and I saw the part that talks about “Playing Russian roulette with six bullets”… Yeah, Mr. Refn mentioned that. When I heard that, I was like, “Taking a hit is inevitable!”
That shows just how big your challenge is. Well, when I went independent, I was already past 50. People typically start thinking about retirement, right? People around me also suggested I do so. But, I still wanted to do something new in my life. And if I’m going to do something,
It’s got to be something no one else is doing. Otherwise, there’s no point. If I can pave the way by doing something… similar to Death Stranding, if the younger generation follows the path I’ve made, maybe it will be easier, in a sense.
Like, finding the water I left behind in the mountains. I want to play a role like that. You’re already doing that. I agree. Well, this will start streaming on February 23rd. We can’t wait! Next topic is… This is another exciting news about a film. Death Stranding will be adapted
Into a live-action feature film! It will be an international collaboration with A24. Yes, it’s a collaboration. This is a collab T-shirt that we made. I want one! Well… Okay! They sold out. Ah, I see… This is the famous A24 logo with the Death Stranding strands coming out. I was incredibly shocked by this news!
“Collaboration with A24!? Oh my god!” But so fitting for Mr. Kojima! And I was instantly convinced. To think you’ll be collaborating with such a company… What do you think about it, Mr. Tsuda? Well, A24 is really a must for anybody who loves movies. They are an indie company and super unique.
Yeah, super unique. Their films are nominated for several awards this year, too. Many games have been made into movies before. But isn’t it difficult? I mean, it takes dozens of hours to complete a game. It seems difficult to put everything into one movie. You’re right. It’s easier to adapt it into a TV series,
Like The Last of Us. It’s quite difficult to adapt a 50-60 hour game like Death Stranding into a 2-3 hour movie. In the past, film adaptations of video games always failed, you know. But in the last 4-5 years, people who understand games
Have taken on the task of adapting it into a film or drama. And several hits have been made, like Super Mario. And that’s the trend these days, but with A24, I want to make something that’s based on a game, but also indie and artisic
Something that can win awards at film festivals like Cannes, Venice or Sundance. Though the details aren’t out yet, I find myself assuming that Norman Reedus will star in this film. Nothing has been decided yet. We’re even still looking for a director. So, the project really has just started!
Is there a possibility that this film will be completely different from the game? The worldview won’t change, of course. But the story of the game as is won’t fit into just 2 hours. We’re still looking at how to approach it
If it does, maybe more video game film adaptations like this will appear. Sounds like you’ll be going to the US more then. Hmm…But I can’t go too often this year. I see. I need to be making games. Of course. You have work to do with Mr. Tsuda!
And we have even more announcements! At The Game Awards in December of last year, Kojima Productions unveiled “OD”. Here is the teaser trailer. I can’t share any information right now. This is completely new, so I don’t know if I can pull this off. When I saw the trailer announcement,
I was confused and thought, “What’s this?” Then I watched it, and I was even more confused! I’ll be giving out information gradually. This picture you see here… You know how before making horror movies or dramas, people go to a shrine for Oharai? Well, this is a scary game,
So we did the Oharai ceremony with the Microsoft team. Actually, my staff heard a clanging noise in our studio. The one you hear, actually, was a real sound we recorded. That’s a real sound?
When the staff recorded in the studio all through the night, that sound was recorded like once every hour. So we should visit a more powerful place, like Mount Osore. I’m thinking of doing Oharai again. By the way, this project was unveiled at The Game Awards.
And a certain someone showed up on stage and created quite a buzz. Let’s take a look. So why Jordan? We met on my podcast, and we found out that we were mutual fans of each other. Since then, we’ve seen each other several times. And we talked about wanting to work together. That’s incredible.
And he’s going to participate in OD. We’re actually calling them “the Avengers” but we have other members like him. Involved in this project? If I announced the names, you’d be surprised. Well, what we learned at The Game Awards was… that Jordan Peele, who directed
Get Out, Us and Nope, will be involved in OD. And what we’ve got in front of us is even more information. We have a list of the members who we’re in talks with. Everything is not set in stone though. So, we have very important information in our hands right now,
But what you can tell us now is that Jordan Peele will be involved in the project and…? That’s all! How will he participate? He’ll be doing it with us. What I’m imagining is what you’ve done in the past, where you do motion capture
And people appear as themselves as a character in the game. No, not like that. He’ll participate creatively. Wow! I’ll be in trouble if I say any more. I don’t think we’re allowed to read this out loud. For the record, Jordan Peele is just one of the Avengers? Yes, one of them!
When we reveal these names, my name will be completely forgotten! That’s not true! You’ll be shocked like, “What the hell!?” Whenever I show this list to agents and managers, they can hardly believe it’s true. They say, “How did you manage to gather all these people who won’t listen to anybody else?!”
“How do you do it?” The protagonist will be played by Sophia Lillis, right? Correct. Okay! Well, we’ve got a message from Sophia Lillis, so let’s check it out! Well, I was… I didn’t really know what to expect. I knew a little bit of what was going to be in there.
But getting to see, you know, Jordan Peele talk and just also the other actors in it, because when we were shooting for the trailer and everything, it was just, it was the team, but it was just me there as an actor.
There was no other actors there, so I didn’t really get to meet anyone else that was going to be in it and everything. So, getting to see those other actors perform as well was… it made it feel like, you know, like a almost like a real film. Like we’re going to shoot together!
This is… These are people I’m going to meet! So it was interesting to have that first experience of “meeting them” on camera. I knew that the opening creaking of the door and the screaming was going to be a part of it. I did not know the tongue twister was.
And it was such a little detail that he added into it. But it was so creepy and scary! And I was, I was scared. I was like, I didn’t know! I wasn’t expecting that. And I think it’s just edited so well, and the music was so good.
Yeah that’s what really stood out though is is the …these little elements that I was not prepared for: the tongue twister and seeing the other people act and the facial expressions, which was just something that was just added before to figure out how the face moves and everything.
But then having that be a part of this, you know, he just added just like a little detail of the music and the way it was framed and the way it was…not framed but, the way it was edited. It made it seem purposeful and
Really added the vibe of what this is going to end up being. This game. So. He’s really talented in that, and his team, His entire team is really talented. So yeah, that’s what stood out. Lastly, there’s another big news, which was announced at SONY’s latest State of Play at the very end.
Here’s the announcement footage. Yes, it will be a brand new, original IP, a next-generation ACTION ESPIONAGE game. Preparations are underway, but production will begin in earnest at KOJIMA PRODUCTIONS after DEATH STRANDING 2. We have extensive experience with SONY, having grown the espionage genre together for almost 30 years.
Also, SONY not only does games, but also music and movies. It will definitely be a strong collaboration. Two years from now, I will celebrate the 40th anniversary of my game production career. I am confident that this title will be the culmination of my work. I cannot tell you so much now…
But we plan to bring together cutting-edge technology and talent from around the world to create it. Of course, it is an interactive game, but it is also a movie at the same time, in terms of look, story, theme, cast, acting, fashion, and sound. With this title,
We hope to transcend the barriers between film and video games. So, this means that Kojima Productions will make a new Metal Gear? We’re going to make a new action-espionage game in cooperation with SONY. It will be both a game and a movie at the same time. That’s why we were at Sony Pictures.
A new action-espionage game. Of course, it will be a game. However, if your mother walks in and sees you playing this game, she’ll think you’re watching a movie. I’m not sure how far we can take it yet. So why did I decide to make this? Well first off, because I became independent,
I wanted to do something new with my own IP. So to challenge myself, I first made DS. Then, to create a franchise, I made DS2. And I wanted to do something even newer, so I started working on OD. And since then, there have been a lot of new ideas.
But in the last eight years, every day on social media, from users all around the world, people have been asking me to create another Metal Gear and stuff like that. Then, I fell ill in 2020.
It was also during the pandemic, so I was sick and isolated during all of it. I even had surgery. And I thought, “I can’t anymore.” I was at my lowest and felt like I couldn’t go back to making games. I wrote a will, too.
And in that moment, I realized that people die. But, I turned 60 last year. I’ll turn 70 in ten years. I hope to never retire. Having said that, if the users desire it so much, I thought I should change my priorities a bit. I still want to do new things,
But I decided to make an action-espionage game. I get many requests from Hollywood to make films, but I’ve refused them. Because I have my own company now, I can’t leave for 1 or 2 years to go make a movie. The company would collapse. I was in a tough spot.
And I talked to Guillermo del Toro about it. And he said, “Hideo, what you’re making is already a movie. Keep going as you are.” His words saved me. And since we’ll be working with many creators in the business, though the output is a game, it won’t be too different from movies.
We had so many big headlines today on HideoTube 2024 Special Edition. What did you think, Mr. Tsuda? We got to hear so much information. There’s a lot to look forward to. It’s awesome! The lineup of upcoming works is all so surprising. And they’re all mysterious,
And all of them sound very new and groundbreaking. But for now, I’m really looking forward to working on DS2. Of course, I’m looking forward to the other titles, too. Thank you for having me today. It was super fun! Thank you! That’s all for today’s HideoTube. This was a special episode
In collaboration with GAME×GAME. In celebration of this collaboration, we have a present for our audience. Here it is! Tadaaa! A Backbone controller! The DS model! This design is based on the BB POD. I see! It’s the color of the BB POD. This is compatible with iPhone 15 Pro and Pro MAX.
We will present it exclusively to 5 people! Wow. The sign-up information is written in the description box of the GAME×GAME channel, not this channel. So please check it out on the GAME×GAME channel! Lastly, could you give us a message, Mr. Kojima?
Well, I had abandoned HideoTube for a long time since it wasn’t easy, but I thought it was time to revisit it again. And now thanks to everyone, this 2024 Special Edition was realized. Did you all enjoy it? If it’s popular, I may do it again.
We got to hear a lot of information. I think everyone’s more excited now. I hope so. This was HideoTube 2024 Special Edition. Thank you very much! Thank you for a wonderful time today! Thank you! Thank you! GAME×GAME and HideoTube! How was it? I had a lot of fun!
It’s been a while since I went to Akihabara, and I really enjoyed visiting the arcades. Let’s go again! Why don’t we play air hockey next time? At arcades. Sounds perfect! That’s always fun to play. I hope that we’ll do a collaboration with GAMExGAME and HideoTube again soon. Congratulations on your wedding!
Here!? Right now!? I’m overwhelmed! Are the cameras still rolling? Congratulations! Whose idea was this? Thank you all! Mr. Kojima gave me flowers! I’m sorry I got married at such a timing! Thank you! I’m so happy! I’m looking forward to working with you again soon. It was a wonderful day.
Yes, it sure was. Excuse me! Oh, Mr. Kojima and Ms. Unai! Mr. Miura! Congratulations on your wedding! Thank you! What are you doing here!? I’m here for something. For a delivery? Yeah, I’m a porter. Just brought some things. But seriously, what are you doing here? We have a meeting planned for later.
What kind of meeting? Well, he took part in the first Death Stranding. Yes, a little bit. And I asked him to work with me again. He’ll play a bigger role in the sequel. We’re working on it now, and we need to catch up. What’s your role? How much can I reveal right now?
Maybe he will be singing and dancing? It might be crazy! I’m sorry I cut in while everyone was celebrating! It was awful timing! Mr. Miura, you should’ve delivered the flowers! Well now I’m looking forward to DS2 more and more! Good luck! Thank you! I’ll catch you later! Yes! OK See you!

Great that a new action espionage game is coming out eventually… But I'm still sad that there isn't a new HIGH SPEED ROBOT ACTION game, specially one from you coming out anytime soon.
Zone of the Enders is amazing and it shouldn't have been left buried with Konami all this time without at least an spiritual successor.
What? Armored Core? That isn't NEARLY as fast as the Orbital Frames can be.
The card is correct, we love you from Iran ❤❤🐆🇮🇷
