Hello everyone. This is Kaoru Kamikawa. Today’s topic is the situation in Ukraine. Terrestrial news coverage doesn’t provide all the details. Please tune in to this channel for updates on Ukraine. The first news item I’ll cover is a long-range attack by the Ukrainian military. The Ukrainian military attacked an oil facility in southern Russia, calling it “one of the largest terminals”… Russia announced that two ships were damaged. The Ukrainian military announced that it attacked an oil loading facility in the port of Tuapse in Krasnodar Krai, southern Russia, facing the Black Sea . It described the facility as “one of the largest oil terminals in Russia.” The port in Krasnodar Province that was attacked is here. In the case of a maritime drone attack, the route indicated by the light blue line is believed to be the shortest distance. If it were an aircraft-type drone, it would have had to cross the Crimean Peninsula to reach the target, which would have required a significant crossing of Russia’s defense zone. The Crimean emergency authorities announced that two foreign ships had caught fire and been damaged in a drone attack. The Ukrainian General Staff stated, “We will take all measures to weaken Russia’s military and economic potential and halt its aggression. ” Here’s a photo taken by a local resident. Contrary to public reports, it appears that the fire did not occur at a port facility, but rather on a ship docked at the port. Here’s a video . A resident filmed the sound of an explosion. Flames can be seen rising toward the port, creating a brighter area. There appear to have been multiple explosions, illuminating the rising smoke with a red glow. Here’s a photo taken from a different angle. It appears that there was more than one explosion; the video shows numerous smaller explosions occurring one after the other. While this attack is believed to have been carried out using domestically produced weapons by the Ukrainian military, external support is also important. However, President Trump has made negative comments about the recent controversy surrounding the provision of Tomahawk missiles to Ukraine . Trump said he “isn’t really considering” the provision of Tomahawk missiles to Ukraine. Regarding the provision of long-range Tomahawk missiles to Ukraine, President Trump said he is “not really considering” it. He said there are “no definitive signs” that Russian President Putin is not ready to end the war . “They’re fighting. It’s tough on both sides, but sometimes you have to fight it out,” Trump told reporters. CNN previously reported that the Department of Defense had given the White House permission to provide Tomahawk missiles to Ukraine, assessing that there would be no adverse impact on U.S. stockpiles. The Joint Chiefs of Staff conveyed this assessment to the White House just before Trump’s meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. Zelensky has requested Tomahawk missiles with a range of approximately 1,600 kilometers to more effectively attack oil and energy facilities deep in Russian territory . Ultimately, the decision on whether or not to provide U.S. military assistance to Ukraine rests with the President. Since taking office, President Trump has refused to provide substantial military assistance to Ukraine, and this latest move once again demonstrated his unwavering commitment to that decision. Although he has not imposed any serious sanctions since taking office, he recently imposed his first significant sanctions. So, it’s not entirely hopeless. In any case, the level of military support is far lower than under the Biden administration, and President Trump’s presence has been a great help to President Putin. Meanwhile, European support for Ukraine continues. The UK has provided Ukraine with additional Storm Shadow cruise missiles for attacks against Russia. Bloomberg reports that the UK has provided Ukraine with Storm Shadow cruise missiles to enable it to continue attacks deep into Russia . This decision was made to replenish Ukraine’s weapons stockpiles ahead of winter. This British move coincides with President Trump’s announcement that he would restrict the supply of Tomahawk cruise missiles. Storm Shadow missiles have already been used by the Ukrainian military in attacks on Russian military-industrial complex facilities. They were used in an attack on the Bryansk Chemical Plant in Selzkow, which produces gunpowder, explosives, and rocket fuel components. The Ukrainian General Staff claimed that British missiles penetrated Russia’s air defense system. The attack on the Bryansk chemical plant marked the first confirmed use of Storm Shadow missiles against targets within Russia since President Trump returned to the White House. The UK began supplying these missiles to Ukraine in the fall of 2024. Germany also continues to provide support to Ukraine. President Zelenskyy thanked Germany for strengthening its air defenses with Patriot missiles. Germany and Ukraine previously agreed to provide Patriot missiles, and this delivery has now been completed. In response, Zelenskyy said, “We have strengthened the Patriot component of Ukraine’s air defense. I personally thank Germany and Chancellor Merz for our joint efforts to protect lives from Russian terrorism . We have been preparing this air defense reinforcement for some time, and this agreement has now been implemented.” With winter approaching, Russian military attacks on infrastructure and civilians in Ukraine continue, making strengthening air defenses essential. Meanwhile, the impact of President Trump’s first serious oil sanctions against Russia is gradually spreading. Chinese refineries have announced a boycott of nearly half of their oil supplies from Russia. Chinese oil refineries are reducing their imports of Russian crude oil in response to the Trump administration’s sanctions targeting Rosneft and Lukoil. According to Bloomberg, state-owned oil companies Sinopec and PetroChina have already canceled multiple purchases of crude oil from Russia and plan to continue refraining from doing so. Smaller private refineries, fearing sanctions, are following suit. Shandong Yulu Petroleum Processing, which is blacklisted by the UK and EU, has already been sanctioned. Order cancellations due to sanctions affect approximately 45% of Russia’s crude oil exports to China. This trend is now also targeting ESPO crude oil from the Far East, causing prices to fall. We will have to wait and see how long the impact of the sanctions will last and at what level they will settle . While there are currently reports of companies cutting purchases of Russian crude oil due to the impact of the sanctions, there is still the possibility that Indian and Chinese companies will resume imports as usual , depending on President Trump’s comments. However, if Russian crude oil is not available on the global market, other oil-producing countries may be considering using it to expand their own market share. OPEC+ countries have decided to increase oil production for the 10th consecutive month. Reuters cited an OPEC+ statement, stating that due to the stable global economic outlook and the current favorable market environment, as evidenced by low crude oil inventories, the eight member countries decided to increase their quotas by 137,000 barrels in December. From April to November, the eight OPEC+ member countries increased their production quotas by more than 270 barrels per day, equivalent to approximately 2.5% of global supply. However, such actions by OPEC+ will always be based on oil prices. When oil prices fall significantly, these countries will keep production low, causing prices to rise. So, it’s not like oil prices will continue to fall indefinitely. However, the fact that oil prices are not generally in a position to rise significantly creates a difficult situation for Russia. By the way, Ukraine has reportedly carried out 160 attacks on Russia’s oil industry this year . Ukraine has targeted Russian oil facilities throughout the war, but in recent months, its attacks have dramatically intensified, forcing Moscow to temporarily ban fuel exports. This channel does not report on all of the Ukrainian attacks. We are only covering the major ones, and attacks on various locations and facilities are ongoing. If we continue to see attacks at the current pace and targets exploding and burning , the blows to Russia will steadily inflict deep wounds. Meanwhile, apart from these attacks on Russia itself, fighting is also ongoing on the battlefield. Here is a war map published by the Institute for the Study of War. At this scale, the overall war situation has hardly changed. It looks similar to last year. However, by zooming in, we can see more clearly the movements on each battlefield . For example, from 2024 to 2025, Pokrovsk was the most frequently mentioned location of intense fighting. The area highlighted by the mouse cursor is Pokrovsk. The Russian attack, which began a year ago, has gradually invaded the city’s perimeter, making supply lines difficult. Meanwhile, a counterattack was launched against a Russian force that had once made a large advance. This is the area north of the city, indicated by the light blue area. Previously, Russian forces advanced here, claiming to have expanded their occupied territory. So far, most of these forces have been annihilated, and the area has been significantly pushed back. However, the battle has not yet completely lifted the siege of the city, so the crisis in Pokrovsk will continue. However , we must consider at what level we are discussing the battlefield . This means that trends in the war at a national level and trends in local battles are not necessarily linked. For example, this channel has covered the Battles of Bakhmut and Audiivka. These two cities served as important bases for Ukraine on the Eastern Front, but they were captured by Russian forces. That doesn’t mean the Eastern Front collapsed, nor did the Ukrainian nation fall apart . This means that the battlefield trends and the state of the war at the national level are assessed differently. Some people may be discouraged by this, but the overall course of the war is far from certain. For example, it doesn’t mean that important bases have been taken . Key cities for Ukraine include the capital, Kyiv; the second-largest city, Kharkiv; and the international trading port, Odesa. The Russian army has yet to capture any of these crucial cities.
