As a guest on a program I met many women in their 20s eer to change careers yeah I was impressed they said they want to learn skills they just want to uh pay raise yeah Linda I know that you often come to come in contact with your to um
Younger Generations in in your lectures and other activities how do you feel about their Generation Well I teach MBA class you know and that actually has by the way every one of my classes has at least seven eight Japanese students many of whom are women um and I just think it’s
A great time to be alive you know it’s there’s so many things that can happen and I am so impressed by them and what they’re beginning to realize is that their the life that their parents had those three stages is not going to work for them and they need to do something
Different and so I think that they’re beginning to realize they need that multi multi-stage life but the other real challenge that young Japanese women face is what happens when they’re in a marriage now that was so when in the 50s when I was brought up my mother was at
Home my father was at work and so the roles were very clear there was no ambigu there was no complexity conflict but now in the UK and in America most women work it’s very unusual now for a woman not to work people would say what
Are you doing and so now those roles are much more in conflict and what’s happening with younger women in in in in in the west is they’re saying we want to have more equal relationships with our men I don’t know if you do you get men
On this program young men no no are you should because that’s whom you need to influence and that’s part of what I do now is I say to young men you have to step up you know I know that there’s this idea that women need to lean in M I
Say no no no there’s already yeah we’re we’re already leaning it’s now for the men to step in to step up are there any pitfalls that the new generation should be aware of what of course every generation has pitfalls and I think the challenge is you never know what they
Are in advance I mean there are I looked at pitfalls in in this book I’m writing at the moment and and some of them are simply to do with the ERA with the with the time that you’re born so for example now uh your your relationship with
Machines is going to be the one of the defining aspects of your generation because the development of machines is going to be so fast um but there’ll be other things that happen to you just because of your life stage you know for example you have a baby and and a family
And then other things happen which are just bad luck you know your a friend dies you get divorced your parents become very ill and so every generation faces that they have they take different forms but those three types of challenge the challenge of being you at this per
Period of time the challenge of your life stage so for example when you had a baby the challenges you faced were probably very similar to mine even though we’re a different age we were both working women who had children and so there’s much you can learn from other
Generations about that but but really the pitfalls I think are very hard to predict so what we have to do is to build resilience so that when these things happen we we say okay I have the strength to get over this problem yeah and you can learn that resilience from
Your um uh your community with variety career in life yes I mean those really the three intangible assets are about building resilience productivity keeping on learning Vitality particularly friendship friendships are so important and and then third transformation making sure that you’ve got the right types of networks those all build resilience I
See as you have said it it is how it is so hard to raise child while you work as they have said so and some of some of our our guests who uh they said that they have interrupted their careers to give birth or to raise children and they
Were having you know anxieties what to do and so so is there anything you would like to say to I I’d say a couple of things really
