I’m Nozomi and a senior in high school. I was born and raised in Japan, but I am currently studying in the United States. What does world peace mean to me? World peace means everyone around the world feels safe, and it can be reached when people understand and respect
their differences with each other. People may have different sexual orientations, political standings, etc. However, having a different standing from people does not mean world peace cannot be reached because we are all unique in our own way; rather, the most significant part is to respect others’ choices. In this speech, although I understand there are many different groups that face discrimination and inequality against them, I will be focusing on how to create a more equitable society for LGBTQIA+ individuals.
In order to achieve this, I propose the idea of incorporating stories about or from LGBTQIA+ individuals in books read by young kids because they are the ones who will be the working members in the near future. It was after I came to the United States that I met people who identify as LGBTQIA+, and soon after, I came to understand that not everyone currently accepts this idea. Nevertheless, that is why I propose this idea. Putting those stories together in a book is different from teaching young kids about different sexual and gender identities, but it is about exposing them to these stories so they can at least know that it is a possibility. How do I publish those stories? I believe everything comes from a small step, so I would like to start by gathering these stories from people and reaching out to publishing companies or putting them together as a book. I can translate stories into different languages so that more people can access my resources. After achieving those, I would like to put the books in community centers or kids’ hospital sections where many younger kids would spend their time. This is just a brief explanation of my idea and there will be more steps required to achieve this goal. However, I believe and hope this idea will contribut to more equity around the world.
