As we were working, drawing became our shared language. So we can’t communicate directly with language. So, Ah! Look at my sketchbook, and we can just draw and exchange ideas that way. We had a plan that we started with. But as we were working and also as I was experiencing Japan, and living here, and having inspirations for my day-to-day, the piece was changing and growing alongside of us. We ultimately wanted to express a feeling of optimism. So it was the piece has a kind of orientation that it’s dark, turning to light. And I remember early in the piece, I think Mariko said to me, “There’s not enough joy.” So we worked to bring the light into the piece. Among migratory birds, there are black crows. Initially, we were aiming for hope. But then we talked about how birds bring not only hope. Sometimes also ominous things like plagues. The world seems to be heading in a positive direction, but it isn’t. Our days are more interwined. By including not only hope but also such ominous elements, we expressed the chaos of the world. Birds could convey multiple messages. We decided to be more explicit about what birds carry, by adding more elements. Through our collaboration, the way I would have done things alone continuously changed. That goes for both of us. When things take an unexpected turn,
it puts me in a difficult situation. Putting a crow here? I was not sure. But that’s how I would do it. Not Andrea. I needed to interpret her opinion, incorporate it,
and consider the world that can be created. It felt like I had discovered a new trail
and reached a summit I had never seen before. Such an experience is not something
you can easily have in everyday life. Same with our workshop. By using different parts from the same table, we encounter something we wouldn’t have done oursevlves, opening up possibilities for our next path. So we had participants experience that in the workshop. I think it went well!
