Hey guys, it’s Yuuka! Today I’m at Kagoshima New Port. I’m finally hopping on the ferry “Hamanoue” from Marue Ferry and heading to Okinawa by boat! But… there’s one tiny problem. A typhoon is literally hitting us right now. Up until just now, I wasn’t sure if the ferry would even leave. I was glued to the website refreshing over and over, and even called to check if it was sailing. But apparently, it’s going to depart! So I’m off to do the boarding procedures now. Look at this. The clouds are super thick and the weather’s awful. Kinda worried… Once I stepped into the ferry terminal, I saw this notice. Because of rough seas today, it’s only stopping at Naze, Wadomari, Motobu, and Naha ports. It won’t be stopping at Kametoku or Yoron. “Conditional operation” basically means they might not go at all, or they could turn back halfway, but if you’re okay with that, hop on. ※So basically, whether you get to disembark is a gamble. By the way, the paper I’m filling out right now is the application form for cars. Found the ferry “Hamanoue”! It’s huge! Don’t lose to the typhoon! Go go, Nami-no-ue! (cheering) …Oh wait, that sounded like “Nami-no-ue” as in “extra beef” at a gyudon shop. Alright, I’ve finished the paperwork, so I’m gonna board the ferry now. I got my boarding pass and a vehicle permit. Apparently, you stick this vehicle permit onto your car with double-sided tape. They gave me a map, and it looks like I have to loop around here to board the ferry. It’s a little tricky, but I’ll give it a shot. Alright, all aboard! Honestly, I was so relieved when I heard the ferry was still running. I kept thinking, “What if they say it’s canceled after I came all this way?” That would’ve been terrifying. But sailing in a typhoon… Yeah, that’s still kinda scary. Even at the ticket counter earlier, everyone was panicking a bit. People were asking the staff lady, “Uh, what exactly does conditional operation mean?” “If we can’t get off, what happens to us?” Conversations like that were flying around. And I thought, yeah… we’re all feeling the same way. There’s actually only one ferry route to Okinawa
that lets you bring your car along. It’s run by a different company, but this route is the only option. So basically, if you’re going, you have to take this route. And today, I really had to go. I’d already made plans and paid for everything. So I was praying hard, like, “Please, let me go today!” I’m so glad my wish came true. This is only my second time boarding with my car, so I have no idea what I’m doing and my heart’s racing. Finally, time to drive onto the ferry. Once again, I’m first in line—way ahead of everyone. Let’s go! Why is it always this bumpy…? Looks like I’m going up. Doesn’t even feel like we’re inside a ferry. ※Feels like I’m on the Indiana Jones ride. ※Backing into my spot while a staff member guides me. Phew… somehow managed it. That was the hardest parking I’ve ever done. I’m so glad there was someone to guide me. Alright, time to leave the car and head into the ferry. They’ve secured the wheel stoppers like five times more than usual. Makes sense—it’s gonna shake a lot with the typhoon. Everything’s locked down tight. Your room will be… Room 247 in the F2 section. My room was right by the entrance. Super easy to find. I’m staying in a 2nd-class Japanese-style room in the F2 section today. No one’s here yet. It’s not a private room this time, so I’ll just chill quietly. Here’s my spot for tonight. Well… “room” is more like a “space.” I put my luggage up here, but I’m not sure if that’s okay. I’ll ask later just in case. There’s not much to show here, but I’ll give you a quick tour anyway. This is the entrance area. Fourteen people can stay here, and fourteen on the other side. So up to twenty-eight people total. As you can see, no one else is here, so I’ve basically got the whole place to myself. My spot is tucked away in the corner. Lucky me—the corner’s right next to an outlet. Bet this turns into a competition later. I wonder if this opens. Oh, that means I can see the view? Nice! The futon isn’t even a full single size— more like a semi-single. Here’s the blanket, and this is the pillow. It also comes with one hanger. Doesn’t this mattress look exactly like the one I have in my mini van? Maybe it’s the same brand. Look at this—so many motion sickness bags. Kinda scary… I’ll just grab one, just in case. Hopefully I won’t have to use it. There’s even a changing room in the corner. Never seen one of those on a ferry before. Well, we’re on board for 25 hours, so I guess people will change clothes once or twice. Looks like I’ll be using it too. Since I’m worried about seasickness, I’m taking an Aneron pill now. This should keep me from getting sick. I actually bought a brand new pack just for today. The website had a big red note saying “Motion sickness pills are NOT sold on board,” so I went on a frantic hunt to buy some yesterday. Alright, now I should be safe from getting sick… 6:00 p.m. — I came up to the observation deck to see the Hamanoue depart. We’re moving! Bye-bye, Kagoshima Port! I’ll be back for my third time. And now, a 25-hour journey begins. Excited… but also nervous. ※Marix Line alternates service with Marue Ferry. ※Next time, I’ll be riding with them. ※With Sakurajima watching over us, we finally set sail from Kagoshima New Port. Since I’ve seen the ferry off, I’ve come to have dinner. I went for the fried shrimp curry. It looks sooo good. But the ferry restaurant’s dinner hours are super short. Dinner’s only served for 50 minutes, so I rushed over. Look, even the chopsticks are cute. They say “Marue Ferry” on them. Alright, let’s dig in. ※?! Since seasickness is pretty much guaranteed, I’m gonna enjoy myself while I still can. Delicious. I’m gonna eat while keeping an eye on the typhoon’s location. It’s kinda hard to tell exactly where it is right now. Apparently, there are three typhoons at once. I’ll pop the map up around here. We might actually pass dangerously close to one sometime between tonight and tomorrow morning. It’s not rocking too much yet, but it’s definitely heading our way, and we’re definitely heading toward it. I’ve brought rain with me plenty of times on ferry trips, but this is my first time going straight into a typhoon. I honestly can’t imagine how much it’s going to rock. But skipping the islands we were supposed to stop at basically means we can’t even get near them, so it must be pretty intense. Hope we’ll be okay… ※For now, distracting myself with an Orion beer. By the way, most people on board today are drivers or what look like Self-Defense Force members. I don’t think I’ve seen anyone here who’s just traveling for fun like me. I mean, unless you have a really good reason, you wouldn’t normally choose to take a 25-hour ferry ride for a trip you could do in an hour by plane. And there’s one more reason this ferry isn’t really used for tourism. It’s this. The total cost today was about $560. Super expensive… And this is the cheapest room available. Just bringing my car adds about $490 to the price. Yeah… big hit to the wallet. By the way, Papa Clipper is the smallest size car, and my room is also the cheapest one, so this $560 is for the cheapest possible combo. If you had a bigger car or a nicer room, it would probably be over $700 easily. I mean, I knew Okinawa trips would be pricey, but still. It’s summer now, and I really wanted to bring you guys a fun Okinawa vlog, so I went for it. ※Please give this video a like and subscribe—it really helps! That was delicious. So good. Since the restaurant’s hours are so short, I kinda had to rush. I drove a lot today and I’m pretty tired, so I’m gonna take a little break. ※As time passed after departure, the rocking reached its peak. I’m back in my room now, and it’s been a little while, but… the rocking’s gotten pretty bad. The seasickness meds are… hitting in reverse. If the waves calm down tomorrow, I want to explore the ship again. ※The seasickness pills aren’t working at all—I could cry. ※This is hands down my worst seasickness ever. Ugh… I feel awful… I’m just gonna lie down for a bit. It’s hard to even sit up… I tried going outside to see what it’s like, but the waves slamming against the ship made it impossible to film properly. Will I even make it to Okinawa in one piece…? After what felt like an endless night, Amami Oshima finally came into view. The last 12 hours have been the toughest of any ferry ride I’ve ever taken. Because of the strong winds, instead of a boarding bridge, foot passengers were getting off via the vehicle ramp. While we were stopped in Amami Oshima for a while, the sky started to brighten. I still feel a bit sick, so I’m going to sleep a little longer to recover. Good morning! After that, the ship kept rocking all night. It was the roughest ride I’ve ever had— even a tripod couldn’t stay standing. Filming was completely out of the question. Now it’s been 16 hours since departure, and I somehow managed to shower and put on makeup. Alright, let’s check out today’s ocean view. Here’s what the ocean looks like right now. The sky’s mostly cloudy, so there’s not much of a view. That over there is Tokunoshima. If the waves are calm around here, you can sometimes see dolphins swimming alongside the ferry. Doesn’t look like that’ll happen today. I wonder if there are any dolphins, though. ※I’ve recovered enough to crack a small joke. While I’m still feeling okay, I’m gonna try exploring the ship. This is the view when you first step inside from the boarding gate. Right after you enter, there’s a shop and an information desk on the right. Here’s what the ship’s map looks like. I’m on the 4th floor now, and you can only go between the 4th and 5th floors. Oh, and this ferry doesn’t have a big bathhouse— just shower rooms. So no soaking in a public bath this time. Also, there’s no arcade or any place to hang out and play games, so this ferry is really just for getting from A to B. Look, they’ve got all kinds of ship stamps. I wonder if I already have any of these. Sunflower Sapporo. I might have it… or do I? Wait, I rode that ship but… I don’t think I bought the stamp. ※Actually yeah, I totally bought it. By the way, here’s what the Hamanoue stamp looks like. It’s super cute. I’ll have to buy one later. The shop hours are short, and it’s not open yet, but I’ll come back when it is. If you go this way, there’s a hallway lined with rooms. There are 2nd-class B berths and regular 2nd-class rooms. My room is just over there—the one marked F2. It’s women-only, so men can’t enter. On the other side, there’s the restaurant. Here’s the restaurant’s opening hours. Last night, I had dinner during that 50-minute slot. Now I’m waiting for lunchtime. Lunch is only 30 minutes, so I’ll make sure to be there on time. Next to the restaurant, there’s this big open space. This spot gets the best cell signal, so I often sat here scrolling on my phone. And over here, there are vending machines and even ice cream for sale. And of course, alcohol too. Since the shop and restaurant hours are so short, it’s nice to have these available anytime. If you take the stairs in the middle of the 4th floor, you’ll get to the 5th floor. I don’t know why, but I kinda love ferry staircases. Anyone else feel that way? Since the ship’s rocking a lot, going up is kinda scary. Feels like I might fall. ※That’s less about the rocking and more about my balance. Here’s what it looks like on the 5th floor. There are plenty of seats and even a TV, so it could be a fun place to relax. And through that door, you can get to the observation deck. This ferry basically has about five types of rooms: Deluxe, First Class, 2nd Class B berth, 2nd Class A berth, and 2nd Class room. The rocking’s getting to me again, so I’m gonna GORON (lie down) until Yoron. But I still wanna have lunch, so I’ll try to recover by then. Thank you for sailing with us. We have now arrived at Okinoerabu Island, docking at Ine Port. Time for lunch! I went with the beef bowl set. ※Might’ve needed the extra-large size to be full. It’s around noon right now, and we’ve just arrived at Wadomari Port. I wasn’t sure if we’d stop here, but we did. After dozing on and off, somehow 18 hours have passed. We were originally supposed to stop at Yoron and Kametoku too, but not today. So our arrival time got moved up from 7 p.m. to 5 p.m. Nice. Even getting there a bit earlier makes me happy. Let’s eat! ※But now that I think about it, I feel bad for people going to Yoron… Since the shop was closed yesterday, I’ve been starving. So happy to finally eat. While we’re docked, there’s no rocking at all—it’s so comfortable. I feel super energized. Better eat as much as I can now. All done. It was delicious, but I’m not full… Still want more… But I’ll stop here so I don’t feel sick again. Heading to the shop now. This is apparently the last time it’ll be open today, so I’d better go now. Here’s what it looks like inside. It’s not that big, but they’ve got snacks, sweets, and Marue Ferry merch. They’ve got lots of alcohol too, but I’ll pass since I’m driving today. Got the ship stamp from the shop! It’s apparently a limited design, and it’s super cute, right? Love it. This makes it about my seventh one. Also grabbed a cup ramen and an onigiri. No, wait—this isn’t what it looks like. I just figured I should eat before disembarking, so I don’t end up starving later. Gonna eat while I still can. ※Didn’t have the energy to come up with a better excuse. Tastes like something straight out of a nostalgic school lunch. We’ve just left Motobu Port, and now we’re finally heading for our last stop—Naha Port. In my cabin, there was just one other passenger— an elderly lady who boarded partway. She got off at Motobu Port earlier. We didn’t really talk much, but she said goodbye to me at the end, and honestly… it kinda felt like I made a friend. Having the room almost entirely to myself was really nice, but wow… the rocking was pretty rough. Also, both the shop and the restaurant had such short hours— that was a bit inconvenient. Basically, I’m always hungry, and there wasn’t much food available. Though, off-camera, I did sneak an ice cream. They just announced that we’ll dock at Naha Port at 5:50 p.m., and it’s 4:00 p.m. now, so about two more hours to go. I thought 25 hours might feel kinda long, and yeah… this one really did. Looking at the map now, I think we’ve already passed through the typhoon area. Pretty sure it’s behind us now. If yesterday’s rocking was a 15 out of 10, today’s is about a 5 out of 10. I mean, you can still feel it, but compared to yesterday, it’s way calmer. My appetite, though… still going strong. Oh, and another surprise— since we’re sailing between islands, I figured there’d be no cell signal at all. But you can actually get a decent signal if you sit by the window, and the ship has Wi-Fi too, so I was even able to reply to comments. That was such a lifesaver. ※Signal was as stable as the Seto Inland Sea—so nice. Right now, we’re about here on the map. Here. I’m not super familiar with Okinawa, so I’m not exactly sure, but we’re near Busena Marine Park. This is probably my fourth time visiting Okinawa, and I’m really excited. So, for the next two hours, I’ll just relax and hope the seas stay calm. ※It’s not raining, but the wind is super strong. ※It’s so strong it’s hard to even stand still. ※But I still love looking at the ocean from the ship. The number of passengers has really thinned out now. And when there’s barely anyone on board, you can do stuff like this. We’re almost at Naha Port now, so I changed into my regular clothes. No other passengers here, and I’ve got the room all to myself, so I figured I might as well do a little stretching. This stretch is something I picked up when I went home recently— my mom was doing it all the time, and she told me, “Yuuka, come do it with me,” so I joined her. When I stopped halfway, she scolded me. So now I do it every day, even when I’m alone. *She calls me to check if I’ve done it, so I can’t slack off.* Right now, a typhoon’s coming and the wind’s so strong that we can’t walk across the boarding bridge. So every time we dock, even pedestrians have to walk down the car ramp. Attention, please. We will soon be arriving at our final port, Naha in Okinawa. Please make sure you have all your belongings and get ready to disembark. *As we got closer to Naha Port, island songs started playing over the speakers.* *There’s something so nostalgic about this tune—I really love it.* *And just like that, my long 25-hour ferry trip comes to an end.* *Thanks for the ride, Naminoue. No matter how many times I drive this road, I never get used to it. After riding the Maruei Ferry Naminoue, I finally made it from Kagoshima Port to Naha Port. Even in the middle of a typhoon, the waves were intense, but I’m so glad we made it safely to shore. Last night the ferry was rocking like crazy— I had the worst seasickness I’ve ever had. But somehow I managed to make it here in one piece. I’m really grateful to all the crew who kept the ferry running in such bad weather. Thank you so, so much.
