What if, without realizing it, you were lured into a killer’s home? August 10, 2011 Inuyama City, Aichi Prefecture, Japan Woman: “I’m just going to relax a little longer, then head to work. So nervous! So excited!” While taking a break at a café, the person posting on her blog was a 21-year-old female college student— Yuko Sato (alias). The “work” she mentioned referred to a modeling assignment through her agency. While attending university, Yuko was also signed with a modeling agency, and through their assignments, she frequently visited different photo shoot locations. The assignment on this particular day was a photo for a massage menu. Yuko: “Maybe I’ll even get a free massage out of it.” After finishing her cold drink, Yuko cheerfully headed to meet the client. But what awaited her was not a massage at all. At 4:45 AM the next morning, a man walked into a police station. He said he had something to show them, and led the officers to his car. And in that car The body of Yuko, whose pubic area had been cruelly mutilated, was lying there. A man brings the body of a female model who was cruelly mauled to the police station. Her body was partially dismembered— She was killed in a truly brutal way. Getting body parts cut off? That’s too gruesome. Does her job as a temp model have something to do with the case? Yes, it does. The woman was attacked at the very location where she had been sent to work as a model. A bloodstained towel. August 11, 2011 Inuyama City, Aichi Prefecture, Japan Around 4:45 AM A car pulled up in front of the police station. The man who got out had short black hair and narrow eyes. He entered the station with a serious expression and said to the officers: Man: “I killed a woman.” He was holding a bloodstained knife. The officer knew immediately that this was no ordinary situation. Man: “There’s a body in the front passenger seat of my car.” Following the man’s explanation, the officer went to check the car parked in front of the station. When he opened the front passenger door, there lay the naked body of a woman, covered with a towel. The officer cautiously lifted the towel, and upon seeing the state of the body, felt an overwhelming urge to vomit. The woman has multiple stab wounds to the neck and abdomen as well as breasts, lips, and pubic area have been removed It was obvious to anyone that she had been brutally abused even after death. That’s seriously messed up. How could he do something like that and not feel sick himself? Later, it became clear that this perpetrator was exactly the type you’d expect to do such a thing. The man who brought the body was Yuji Niwa. The deceased woman was identified as Yuko Sato (alias), a student at a private university in the prefecture. When asked by the police about his relationship with Yuko, Niwa explained as follows: Niwa: “I requested a model dispatch, and she was the one who came.” In other words, on the day of the incident, Niwa and Yuko were supposedly engaged in some kind of photo shoot. But what could have happened between the client and the model? Let’s go back in time— to the day before the body was discovered. August 10, 2:30 PM College student Yuko was at a café, sipping a cold drink, and updating her blog on her phone. Yuko: “I’m heading to work. So excited!” Yuko was a temp model affiliated with the Nagoya branch of a modeling agency headquartered in Tokyo. She took part in photoshoots for advertisements, TV show extras, party reception jobs, and even served as a ring girl at martial arts events. She worked at a wide variety of venues beyond typical modeling gigs. That day, she had a photo shoot scheduled for a new chiropractic clinic opening in Ichinomiya City. Yuko: “Maybe I’ll get a free massage out of it.” After leaving the café, Yuko headed excitedly to her meeting spot at JR Ichinomiya Station. Waiting at the station was Yuji Niwa, the chiropractor who had arranged the shoot. Prompted by Niwa, Yuko got into his car. Niwa: “There’s a simple way to realign your spine at home. I’ll show you for free.” Yuko: “Really? That sounds great!” Niwa’s friendly manner and the offer of a free treatment brought a smile to Yuko’s face. She had no idea that this man had never intended to do a photo shoot in the first place. Here’s my question— Was the shoot really supposed to be just the two of them? Normally, when a model is with an agency, they’d be accompanied by a manager or someone. Isn’t being alone in a closed space with someone pretty dangerous? You’re absolutely right. That’s a very important point. This man deliberately bypassed agency protocols and found ways to manipulate the system. Niwa was a highly deviant criminal, after all. He was well-versed in cunning tactics like this. A man consumed by desire. The perpetrator, Yuji Niwa, was a Korean resident living in Ichinomiya City, Aichi. He lost his father at a young age and inherited the family home, where he lived alone. At that house hung a sign reading: “Ichinomiya Branch, Taekwondo Association.” Niwa claimed to be a taekwondo instructor. But to local residents, he was a complete mystery beyond that claim. Even though it was his family home, no neighbors had ever spoken to him, nor did anyone know what he did for a living. At Niwa’s house, in addition to the taekwondo school, there was another sign that read “Power Plant Shukutoku.” This was the name of the chiropractic clinic he claimed to operate. But don’t be fooled by the sign. When Niwa once advertised for a receptionist at the clinic, he said the following to a young woman who came for an interview: Niwa: “Today, I’ll let you try a new face-slimming treatment, just for you.” He blindfolded the woman and told her to lie face-down on the examination table. From there, he began touching her inappropriately. Yes—posing as a chiropractor or clinic owner, touching women under that guise was his typical method for committing these crimes. In reality, Niwa was a temp worker who bounced between jobs. He pretended to be a chiropractor in order to get access to women’s bodies. He had over ten prior convictions. Most of them were for indecent exposure and other sexual offenses. He had also once been arrested for soliciting minors. At local adult establishments, he forced extreme and inappropriate acts, such as penetration or using needles. As a result, he was banned from most of these places. In 2010, he exposed himself to a convenience store employee. Up until just eight months before this incident, Niwa had been in prison. This guy’s crimes are way beyond what you’d imagine. Over ten convictions? How many times does he have to do it? It’s said that rehabilitation for sex offenders is difficult and their reoffending rate is high. Niwa is a textbook example of that. Now, let’s explain why repeat offenses are so common among sexual offenders like him. So this leads to today’s keyword; Cognitive distortions in sex offenders. In psychology, cognitive distortions refer to misinterpreting reality inaccurately and developing irrational patterns of thinking. In sexual offenses, these distortions often numb guilt and serve to justify the offender’s actions. For example, sex offenders might think: “She says no, but she doesn’t really mean it.” “Even groping DVDs are sold, so it must be acceptable.” “Everyone else does it too.” They reinterpret their crimes in a way that suits their own convenience. These distorted thoughts can be shaped by excessive exposure to explicit adult content, or by blaming the victims, such as thinking “They dressed too provocatively,” or “Why didn’t she resist more?” These types of judgmental views can become habitual ways of thinking over time. Without feeling guilt, even after being arrested, many sex offenders continue to reoffend. Sure enough, even after serving time for public indecency, Niwa showed no sign of remorse. Around June 2011, two months before the incident, he began calling several modeling agencies with the following pitch: Niwa: “I’m the director of a chiropractic clinic called Power Plant Shukutoku, and I’m creating materials on knee development during adolescence. I’d like to request a model.” NIwa: “Could you send a girl aged around 13 to 15?” Naturally, most modeling agencies who heard this insisted on having a staff member present. But since Niwa’s intent was inappropriate from the start, he realized he needed to revise his plan. Niwa: “No agency would send a teenage girl alone, of course…” So the next excuse he came up with was: that he wanted to take photos for the menu of a new chiropractic clinic. To get a model sent alone, he shifted the target to adult women. Even so, many agencies still requested that someone accompany the model. But upon hearing Niwa’s explanation, one agency determined that it would be safe to send the model alone and that was Yuko’s agency. Yuko’s agency had a policy of not accepting shoots in private homes. However, Niwa explained the location was both his home and business, and for some reason, the agency accepted that explanation. Even when asked to show the store’s website, Niwa replied that it was still under construction because the business was new, and the agency believed him. Yuko’s agency was fairly well known, but at the time, they lacked thorough vetting procedures for clients. Later, when the agency sent photos of several available models, Niwa specifically requested Yuko. Despite it being a shoot in a closed setting, Yuko headed to the location alone, with no accompanying staff. So they said they don’t allow shoots in private homes— but private home slash business is fine? That’s way too inconsistent. This kind of carelessness is unacceptable. Even the staff in charge probably didn’t think it was even possible for harm to come to the model. That kind of thing almost never happens.” They might’ve been under that illusion. And so, Yuko was lured into Niwa’s home. What awaited her there was a nightmare in which she wouldn’t even be able to resist. Silent intimidation. Around 3 PM on August 10, 2011, Niwa and Yuko arrived at the house that had been described as both his residence and business. Niwa led Yuko to a tatami room on the second floor and immediately said: Niwa: “I’ll do that spine alignment technique I mentioned earlier. Lie face down on that platform.” Following his lead, Yuko lay down on the platform. What Niwa did next clearly had nothing to do with any treatment. Niwa: “I’m going to secure your body.” With those words, he began tying Yuko’s hands and feet behind her back with rope. Yuko, bound tightly, winced and asked him: Yuko: “This is a bit too tight. Is this really necessary?” Niwa didn’t answer her. Instead, he took out several sheets of paper with something written on them and shoved them in front of Yuko. Niwa: “Take off your clothes. I’m going to take photos of you naked. If you just follow my instructions for two hours, you’ll be able to go home. But if you make a sound, even a little— I’ll cut your throat with this knife. You’ll be dead in two minutes.” In Niwa’s mind, that threat was enough to make her obey. But— Yuko: “No! Somebody help me!” Yuko screamed in terror, her face twisted in fear. She twisted her body with all her strength and screamed over and over again. Niwa: “Shut up! Be quiet!” Fearing neighbors might hear and call the police, Niwa tried to silence her. But no matter what he said, Yuko refused to stop resisting. Niwa grew increasingly frantic. In his right hand was the knife he had initially meant only as a threat. And then— The worst happened. Seriously though, why would he think that kind of threat would actually make someone obey him? A total stranger suddenly says “take off your clothes”— who in their right mind would actually comply with that? Thinking women will just do whatever you say— that distorted mindset is another common trait among sex offenders. But the most terrifying part of this case was what Niwa did next. He believed that threatening a woman while she was tied up would make her obey. Niwa was convinced that it would work. But when Yuko resisted violently—something he hadn’t expected— Niwa ended up killing her unintentionally. He fell into a complete state of panic. Niwa: “I’ve killed a person. What do I do now?” Niwa thought he had to hide the body no matter what. He loaded Yuko’s lifeless body and her belongings into his car. He drove aimlessly, thinking the following: Niwa: “It’s over. I’ll die together with her.” Eventually, he arrived in the mountains of Tajimi City, Gifu There, in a secluded area, he abandoned her body. He then planned to take his own life. Niwa downed tranquilizers and canned beer on the spot. That’s when it happened. A demonic thought crossed his mind. Niwa: “If I’m going to die anyway, then nothing else matters.” Niwa slowly took out a knife and stared at Yuko’s body. And then, as if to satisfy his warped urges, he defiled her body further in a horrific manner. After that, he abandoned her badly damaged body in the mountains. He initially tried to leave the scene, but felt the body might be discovered too soon. So he loaded it back into his car. Niwa called his mother and, in a weak voice, said: Niwa: “I want to die. I’m going somewhere far away.” At 4:45 AM the next morning, Niwa returned to Aichi Prefecture and turned himself in at the police station. Whether it’s the reason for the killing, or the reason for what he did after— none of it makes any sense or can be justified. To think she was sent alone to meet someone like this— It’s heartbreaking. I feel terrible for her. This case— was exceptionally brutal, marked purely by the perpetrator’s cruelty. For people like this, we all wish they’d stay in prison for life. I’m sure many of you feel the same. So what was the outcome of the trial? After turning himself in to the police, in the mountains of Tajimi City, Gifu Prefecture, Yuko’s belongings were found, along with large amounts of blood at Niwa’s home. These became key evidence, leading to Niwa’s arrest and indictment. About a year later, on October 15, 2012, Niwa was convicted of attempted indecent assault, murder, corpse mutilation, and abandonment. He was sentenced to 27 years in prison. His actions were deemed extremely cruel and selfish, and prosecutors had sought life imprisonment. However, the fact that Niwa turned himself in, and that he claimed he had no intent to kill, led to a reduced sentence. Regarding the defilement of the body, he claimed he was under the influence of tranquilizers and alcohol at the time, and that, too, factored into his sentence reduction. This case also raised questions about the model agency that sent Yuko to the site alone. Her family filed a lawsuit against the agency, seeking approximately 100 million yen in damages. Ultimately, her death was ruled a work-related accident, and compensation was granted to her family. The modeling agency also paid part of the damages, resulting in a settlement. The agency admitted they had never imagined that a model could become the target of such a crime. They issued a formal apology to her family, and promised to ensure that no such tragedy would ever happen again. Sadly, in this world, people like Niwa— who slip past society’s watchful eyes and commit such despicable crimes—still exist.
