Today, you are standing at the crossroads of 630 years of history. What brings you to Gyeongbokgung Palace? A day out with family or friends? Or maybe a moment of solitude amidst the hustle and bustle? But why Gyeongbokgung Palace? Perhaps, somewhere deep in your heart you are waiting for a sudden resonance to change your life. From the past to the present and to leave a resonance in your life ‘Contemplation of Gyeongbokgung Palace.’ Shall we slowly begin this journey? [Contemplation of Gyeongbokgung Palace / Walk ASMR narrated by an artist’s voice] Hello, today we are finally, with Gyeongbokgung Palace we’re holding an exhibition inside Gyeongbokgung Palace. ‘Yessay’ and ‘National Heritage Channel’ are holding an exhibition together as a project. So, I’ve invited a special guest and it’s none other than Super Junior Donghae. Hello, I’m Super Junior Donghae. Nice to meet you. The reason I called Donghae is actually Donghae goes to sees exhibitions sometimes and he is somewhat related to Gyeongbokgung Palace. Right, you can’t leave me out of it. What kind of connection was there? If you look over at the two o’clock direction from here there’s the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency. During my military service for about a year and seven months I have memories of living here and it was really exciting so visiting here again after a long time I came in a good mood. Just like when we go to France, we visit the Eiffel Tower or when we go to Italy, we visit the Colosseum when people come to South Korea they think, ‘Where should I go?’ Gyeongbokgung Palace is the most visited place. Oh, that’s right. But while living here why haven’t I explored inside Gyeongbokgung Palace more deeply? With excitement I came with the intention to enjoy it but I feel a bit more reverent now. Yeah, kind of like that. Here it feels like you shouldn’t be joking around. We will observe well and feel deeply and think about what stories would be good to share. I’ll make sure to observe and reflect thoughtfully. Shall we get going? You are now passing through Heungnyemun Gate and crossing Yeongjegyo Bridge entering the sacred ‘King’s Space.’ Well, I came to see Gyeongbokgung Palace today but the sun is so strong that I can’t see Gyeongbokgung Palace clearly. It’s really too blindingly bright, but now there are many clouds No, look, look right now. Over there, it’s like a painting, really. [Yeongjegyo Bridge Concentric Circles / The beginning of the sacred world, a space of etiquette] [Concentric Circles / A sculpture installed for the ‘Contemplation of Gyeongbokgung Palace’ exhibition / It allows us to see Gyeongbokgung Palace as a window and a door, a passage of thought] What kind of scenery do you see beyond the gaps in the concentric circles? The roofs of the various buildings, high and low are wrapped around with the smooth curves of Inwangsan Mountain. Gyeongbokgung Palace was positioned according to Feng Shui. It was carefully placed in its current location. Bukaksan Mountain, located to the north of Gyeongbokgung Palace, symbolizes governing the nation through scholarship. It’s said to possess the energy to produce leaders. Moreover, it receives the warm energy of the sun from the south. With Inwangsan Mountain and Naksan Mountain on both sides, and Geumcheon Stream flowing below this place became an ‘auspicious site’ where positive energy gathers and doesn’t disperse. This very place is Gyeongbokgung Palace. All of this was designed to support good governance and to realize an ideal state. It was a thoroughly calculated choice. [Boknangi / A White Tiger living in Geunjeongjeon Hall and a friend accompanying the Contemplation of Gyeongbokgung Palace exhibition] Boknangi. The reason Boknangi is here is because this is actually a White Tiger. White Tiger. It symbolizes Korea, and when you think of Gyeongbokgung Palace when you look at this architecture you’ll see many mythical animals. Among those mythical animals something like a guardian deity protecting Gyeongbokgung Palace. It’s not a cat, it’s a tiger. It’s gotten a bit messy. Maybe it’s from rolling around. But there’s a story. There’s a tale that it comes to life at night. There’s a tale that it comes to life at night. Just like in “Toy Story.” How much of this am I supposed to believe? It’s more like one of those legends, you know. Seriously. Wow, but it’s really impressive. It really is impressive. [Gyeongbokgung Geunjeongjeon / National Treasure / Central building of Gyeongbokgung Palace / Where the king received New Year greetings, held state ceremonies, and welcomed foreign envoys] The kings of Joseon used to stand in the courtyard of Geunjeongjeon Hall. They would meet their officials and conduct important state ceremonies. Have you ever reached the entrance of Geunjeongjeon Hall then turned around and looked south from there? Right beyond Gwanghwamun, endlessly lies the world of the common people. Geunjeongjeon Hall is oriented towards the lives of the people. It embodies a command to diligently oversee governance. These days, actually there are a lot of new buildings and structures being built. They’re pretty and somewhat unique. Such buildings are becoming more fashionable. When I was a kid, living in a traditional tiled house in an alley those memories make me relate more to traditional architecture. Should I call it this kind of interior design? I wish these elements would appear more often. In Korea, too. Korea lacks that traditional interior design from the past. That’s something I really miss. Places where you can see such things in Seoul are places like Samcheong-dong and Seochon. You have to visit these places to see them. Images that come to mind when you think of Korea should be better preserved. I wish they were shown more often. Visiting Gyeongbokgung Palace strengthens these thoughts. It’s so beautiful. Visually, it’s a bit different. [Geunjeongjeon Hall Concentric Circles / Sensing time at the center of power] Through mirrors, mirrors, and more mirrors you can appreciate the views and perspectives. That’s right. Isn’t that the kind of feeling it gives? The mirrors are angled like this. You can look at Gyeongbokgung Palace through them. I want to ask the artist about this sculpture. I’d like to know what inspired them to create it. Donghae is curious. What does that sculpture represent? When we think of a raindrop falling there’s one center, but that raindrop creates a ripple effect. Exactly, when one falls, it creates a ripple effect and spreads. [Choi In-sun / Art Director of the ‘Contemplation of Gyeongbokgung Palace’ exhibition]
Jeong Do-jeon, who actually built Gyeongbokgung Palace used the term ‘concentric circles.’ So it’s like the palace has its own layers, but they all form a central unity. It’s about the ripple effect. If we were to compare it to a person it’s just one person, but as they move around, they influence many people. Like two people who have a significant impact. It’s about what kind of thoughts I can have. Instead of jumping to conclusions like ‘What is this’ it’s about thinking for yourself. There was a desire to create a sculpture like that. While feeling each perspective and emotion some might just see a tiger and think it’s cute. Others might think about the future. A sculpture that opens up diverse thinking would be good. But I do resonate with that idea. This one thing forms a center and creates a ripple effect. And it spreads outwards, right? It’s the same for Yesung and me. When a single drop of water falls when we share a story it can create a ripple effect and influence someone. So, keep a strong center and be cautious with your words and actions I feel like I’m getting a sense of that. That’s exactly what we’re talking about. It’s not just about those two great individuals but also as individuals think of a sculpture as a single drop of water. How about taking a moment to appreciate it with that thought? Let’s take another look at Geunjeongjeon Hall. Doesn’t it feel like a new dimension has opened up? Here, within the concentric circles it’s like a world unfolding like a kaleidoscope. A space considered the most beautiful view in Gyeongbokgung Palace. [Gyeonghoeru Pavilion / National Treasure / A place for banquets during national celebrations or when envoys visited / The largest pavilion in Korea]
This is the Gyeonghoeru Pavilion. Gyeonghoeru Pavilion. Isn’t it just amazing? I got goosebumps, seriously. I remember being up there with fans when it rained. I attended a briefing. I attended a briefing. It was no joke. When there was a national celebration or foreign envoys visited they held banquets. On regular days, the king and his officials would gather. So, it’s a space for ‘interacting with virtue,’ the Gyeonghoeru Pavilion. Originally, the Gyeonghoeru Pavilion was surrounded by high walls. It was a place only accessible by royal invitation. So, for the officials back then, the Gyeonghoeru Pavilion was a place they dreamed of visiting at least once before they died. In summers like these days the king would retreat to the spacious platform of the Gyeonghoeru Pavilion enjoying meditation and contemplation. I’m not sure if I can express this well, but it’s awe-inspiring. It’s really so amazing, truly. The sky reflects on the water, and the pavilion seems to float in the sky embraced by the mountains of Bukaksan Mountain and Inwangsan Mountain. This is the aesthetic of Eastern architecture, Chakyung. The philosophy of bringing natural scenery into architecture as part of life. Gyeongbokgung Palace embodies harmony with nature and was a space for contemplation. There it is. It’s in the forest. Wow, this is insane. [Gyeonghoeru Pavilion Concentric Circles / Contemplating under the palace sky]
The scenery is insane. I’m feeling dizzy, really. It’s so impressive, really. Wow, but this was done so well. These concentric circles are placed in an unexpected spot. Each place has a different vibe, right? Now, here, Boknangi is in this forest playing as if it’s their home. Is it okay if I lie down here? Yes. You can lie here and look at the sky. I’ll film you. But looking at the sky is nice. Looking at the sky is nice. [Jang Junho / Artist] Hello, sir. This is the artist who created Boknangi. I want to hear a detailed explanation about Boknangi. Boknangi is meant to protect Gyeongbokgung Palace. It possesses extraordinary powers and abilities. It’s like a superhero for Gyeongbokgung Palace. Guardian deity. As for what abilities it has like what you saw at Geunjeongjeon Hall it can change its size at will. It can grow larger or smaller. And it can pretend to sleep. – You saw it a little while ago, right?
– Yes. It pretends to sleep, but it’s not actually asleep. It’s monitoring the people next to it. As you know, Yesung, its greatest ability is acting cute. Did it act cute? Boknangi did? Because even though it’s a guardian deity of Gyeongbokgung Palace if it only felt intimidating you wouldn’t be able to find Boknangi lovable. When I went to Charles Bridge in the Czech Republic among the statues there there was a female statue with a worn-out belly. There’s a legend that if you touch the statue’s belly, you can get pregnant. There’s such a legend. Women often go and touch the belly because of that legend. Just like that, for Boknangi if you pat Boknangi’s head all the struggles we were thinking about will be resolved. You could receive such power. I want to create our own legend here. Yesung and Donghae, please touch it a lot. – Alright.
– Touch it a lot so you can take that energy and pass it on to your fans. Alright. Thank you. Wow, isn’t it beautiful here too? How did they make it so beautifully? I wonder how many kings and ministers lived here? This was a place where the king and his family would relax. This is Hyangwonjeong Pavilion. [Gyeongbokgung Palace Hyangwonjeong Pavilion / Treasure / A two-story pavilion built by King Gojong as part of a political initiative along with the Geoncheonggung Residence] Where flowers bloom and fade all year round. Above the pond that offers a variety of beauty. A garden where the ridges of Bukaksan Mountain spread out like a folding screen. A place that once offered simple leisure to a king burdened by state affairs. Look, there’s another one over there. Wow, there are concentric circles here [Hyangwonjeong Concentric Circles / Gyeongbokgung Palace embracing Seoul] Oh, Boknangi has grown again. It’s not a cat, though. A tooth is broken. Looks like you might need some scaling? This is exactly like that. The window inside Gyeongbokgung Palace, with a feel of the grid. It’s made just like a window. Wow, but this is… This is a real idea. It’s so unique, the perspective is different. Those mirrors within the grid change the view. The scenery changes when you look through them. Wow, what’s really cool is looking at the underside of the mirror, you can see the sky. That’s why, depending on your perspective the viewpoint seems to change too. Today seems to be giving so much inspiration. Oh, that’s it. The speaker shape I was most looking forward to. [Gyotaejeon Hall Concentric Circles / Contemplating hidden power and the aesthetics of yin and yang] We’ve finally reached the innermost part of Gyeongbokgung Palace. Do you see the pavilion located to the right beyond the concentric circles? The most secretive and sacred area of Gyeongbokgung Palace. It’s Gyotaejeon Hall, the queen’s residence. The shape of a speaker. Wow, this is… Oh, it connects to that door. Heaven and earth. The state where Yin and Yang meet and create harmony, called ‘Gyotae.’ Literally, Gyotaejeon Hall is where heaven and earth connect. It was a space where all things were created. The politics of the palace that move the world are widely visible. But the core that makes all order and power possible is in the deepest part of the palace, even within the hidden palace. It was hidden in Gyotaejeon Hall. It’s shaped like a speaker, but it’s designed so you can focus on Gyotaejeon Hall, right? From over there. Walk along and look inside the square as you go. The feeling changes. When you see it up close. Stay in the shade. That’s amazing. Oh? Wow. Oh, what’s that? It’s so cute and well done. Wow. It’s so cute. I almost cried. No, seriously. Can you see it? Did you see it? Yeah, that’s right, here. I like it. [Saenggwabang / A space where records of contemplation flow, encountering various national heritage such as palaces, old houses, artisans, nature, and food] This place was really nice too. Where is it? Jinkwansa Temple. Temple cuisine has been recognized as national heritage this time. It’s been registered and recognized. But honestly, it was epic. – It was exceptionally healthy and delicious food.
– Really? Truly epic. But seriously. I feel like I’ve learned a lot personally. Like what? Beyond just being pretty. Because of work and living on a tight schedule I thought that I didn’t have time to reflect on these things – but it was just an excuse.
– That’s right. Many people plan but hesitate to take the plunge. Regarding this culture. We do creative work. I think we should have embraced many elements of Korea’s unique cultural heritage and should have promoted it more. And musically too. It’s not just about being pretty and cool at first glance. To think again about what I felt today. Things we can present to our fans or the public. I think there should have been more things like that. Sure, there are parts I didn’t know well either. I’ve learned a lot. I’ve felt so much too. And while doing so, again. Meeting many people in this field. These days, people often dream of traveling abroad. No, there are so many places to visit in Korea too. There are many places as good as overseas. You should also look go and experience it yourself then you can really feel a lot and get good influences and positive influences. At Gyeongbokgung Palace in the summer I was really happy to encounter this exhibition. Gyeongbokgung Palace reflected in the sculptures we expressed felt a bit different from the last time I came. Earlier, Donghae talked about how it is good positively. I’ve been thinking a lot about Korea has overcome so many struggles. How did Gyeongbokgung Palace preserve itself through all that and manage to endure like this? I thought about that a lot. Because it’s a place that has endured countless journeys and hardships I thought it shines even more beautifully. You should also come to Gyeongbokgung Palace to enjoy and feel this place. The feelings you’re experiencing now all the emotions and hardships when you finally get through that journey they can get this beautiful, I hope you feel that, too. Come visit Gyeongbokgung Palace this summer. Share your thoughts here get through this summer well and I hope you’re happy in 2025. 1.

  2. Thank you for your hard work to create this beautiful exhibition, I really liked the different perspectives to see Gyeongbokgung Palace and the insights given by Yesung! I hope to see more of this and learn more! Thank you Yesung! Your voice made me connect even more with the history behind!
